Richland High School Color Guard

What is Color Guard?

Marching bands have become a huge part of the high school experience in the State of Texas. Texas is known for its award winning programs. Richland High School is one of those programs. They are consistently a finalist in Bands of America (BOA) competitions and were the 2003 4A State Marching Band Champion. But along with the instrument players on the field there is a small elite group that makes the band a little more lively and colorful. It is the Color Guard. The Color Guard adds excitement and visual effects to the band’s performance. The guard spends hours perfecting formations, dance and flag and weapon work. The Richland High School Color Guard is an award winning group. They are ranked as one of the best guards in the State of Texas and ranked as one of the top guards in the country. This group shares a special bond both on the football field and off.

Do I need any special talents to be in Color Guard?
No. The most important thing to bring to the program is a willingness to work hard and learn. You will not be expected to know how to spin a flag, rifle or saber. All those skills will be taught in due time. However, any background in the field of dance would be helpful.

Will there be travel involved?
Yes. This is an exciting year for both the band and color guard. Every two to four years, Richland High colorguard1.jpgSchool travels to Indianapolis, IN for the National Bands of America Championships. In the most recent trip, Fall 2005, the Rebel Band received its highest National’s ranking ever…by being ranked 7th in the Nation. This is a great opportunity to not only compete at a high level but also an opportunity to see some of the best marching programs in the country. They will also perform at the BOA Regional Competition in Arlington Oct 13, 2007 and in the Super Regional Competition in San Antonio on November 2-3, 2007. The band and guard will also be performing at the annual UIL competitions held locally.

What about practice?
The Color Guard does have after-school practice. Practice is mandatory. However, it is scheduled in such a way as to minimize the affect on school work. The State of Texas dictates practice hours for all extra curricular activities. The guard and band practice no more that 8 hours per week. These hours are spread over several nights. As with any extra curricular activity, school work is always a priority.  Each year there is a mini-camp in mid-May and a summer band camp the last week of May. These camps are mandatory. Many of the fundamentals of marching will be taught at this time. There will also be practice at least once a week during the summer. If you need to miss a practice just let the director know in advance.

What about Winter Guard?colorguard3.jpg
Winter Guard is a beautiful and graceful activity.  It combines music, theater, dance, flag, weapon work and the joy of performance.  The guard spends hours perfecting dance moves and flag and weapon work. The Richland High School Winter Guard is an award winning group that competes in both the NTCA and WGI circuits.

How much does it cost?
The cost varies each year. You will need to purchase the costume used for the fall. There will also be travel costs for the trip to San Antonio and Indianapolis, IN. The directors will do everything in their power to minimize the cost associated with the program. Each student will have a student account which will generate monthly billings enabling parents to make multiple payments instead of one lump sum payment. These accounts are strictly confidential and individual needs can be discussed with the director.

What about Fundraising?
There will be multiple opportunities for each member to participate in fundraising activities to help defer the cost of the program. We schedule car washes and Spirit Nights with local restaurants. There will be more information on this in the coming months.

How do I audition?
Auditions for the fall marching season are usually held in April.  Auditions for Winter Guard are held in November.  Please check the website for the most up to date information regarding times.
